Pre-galvanized or Hot-Dip Galvanized? Choosing the Right Cable Tray for Your Project
In electrical infrastructure projects, the safety of cable management systems depends as much on the corrosion resistance of the trays used as it does on the smooth operation of the cables. An incorrect coating selection can lead to rust within a few years, a reduction in load-bearing capacity, and high replacement costs. The most common question when selecting cable trays is: Pre-galvanized or Hot-Dip Galvanized?
Pre-galvanization (continuous galvanizing) is achieved by passing the steel sheet through a molten zinc bath while it is still in coil form at the manufacturing plant (EN 10346 standard).
Advantages: Provides a smooth and uniform surface. It is aesthetically clean and cost-effective.
Application Areas: Dry indoor environments with low relative humidity, such as offices, shopping malls, residential projects, schools, and hospitals (C1 and C2 corrosion categories).
Points to Consider: Although zinc provides a cathodic protection effect on cut and punched edges, it carries a risk of corrosion in high-humidity or outdoor conditions.
Hot-dip galvanizing is produced by immersing the cable tray into a molten zinc bath at approximately 450°C after all mechanical operations—such as punching, cutting, and bending—are completed (EN ISO 1461 standard).
Advantages: All edges, welds, and mounting holes of the product are covered with a thick zinc layer. Due to its high micron thickness, it offers decades of corrosion resistance against the harshest outdoor conditions.
Application Areas: Outdoor sites, harbors, power plants, chemical plants, wastewater treatment facilities, and heavy industrial zones (C3, C4, and C5 corrosion categories).
| Comparison Criteria | Pre-galvanized Cable Tray | Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) |
| Processing Stage | Before forming (Coil sheet) | Immersion in bath after fabrication |
| Coating Thickness | Typically 15 – 20 µm | Average 45 – 85 µm |
| Application Area | Indoor, low-humidity environments | Outdoor, seaside, heavy industry |
| Surface Appearance | Bright, smooth, decorative | Matte, slightly rough, industrial |
| Cost | Economical | Higher initial investment, lifetime maintenance advantage |
Accurately analyzing environmental conditions while preparing your project specification is critical. For dry indoor installations, Artım Metal Pre-galvanized Standard and Gold Formed Trays provide a budget-friendly and aesthetic solution, whereas for exterior facades, rooftop solar power plants, and industrial sites, Hot-Dip Galvanized Heavy Duty Trays guarantee the lifespan of your infrastructure.
